Purpose
As a design team of two, the brief of this project was to design an architectural pavilion inspired by your partner. The goal of the pavilion was to create a place where people would get engulfed in an organic curvilinear structure from the heat of the summer and into this serene area to reflect and slow down. The concept was inspired by my partner’s passion for swimming and her Chinese culture.
The pavilion will have a wooden base with scattered sand representing their sense of calmness when feeling sand between their toes in the water. The green walls are inspired by their Chinese Mid-Autumn festival when they eat traditional Chinese food made with bamboo leaves and glutinous rice. They believe that food brings family and friends together. The smooth and grooved walls symbolise their family. Smooth is the sense of belonging, love, and care from a family, but the grooves are the ups and downs. The stone signifies the annual Chinese tradition of receiving a specific stone based on your Chinese zodiac. It would bring luck and protection when “pairing with your sign.”
